Recognizing the need for an improved method of measuring the density of thin layer asphalt overlays, Troxler developed the first true thin layer density gauge, the 4640-B Surface Thin Layer Density Gauge.
Designed to measure the density of thin asphalt and concrete layers from 2.5 to 10 cm (1 - 4 inches), the Troxler Model 4640-B Thin Layer Density Gauge accurately measures the overlay density without influence from underlying material. No nomographs or manual corrections are required in order to compute the true density of the overlay. With onsite results available in as little as one minute, the Model 4640-B can provide the user with test results when they are needed, not hours after compaction has been completed.
Special Functions

The Automatic Drying Unit (ADU) provides a rapid drying method for compacted asphalt road cores that come from the jobsite wet and must be quickly analyzed for density. This equipment is ideal for same-day analysis of road cores to acquire data for correlation purposes, or to know if the asphalt placed that day meets specifications.
The ADU takes the place of drying the core samples in front of a fan or in a low temperature drying oven for several hours. The typical drying time is between 10 and 20 minutes, saving you hours of waiting. The core density can easily be determined within 30 minutes of arriving in the laboratory. The ADU can also dry loose aggregate or asphalt by using the bag provided with the unit.
Pushing the start button activates the vacuum pump, which draws the air out of the sample chamber. After the air is evacuated, the water is then drawn out of the sample. The attached heating mechanism keeps the sample close to room temperature.
User Friendly Interface and Simple One-Button Operation
The ADU is user friendly with a large, easy-to-read display and an audible alert that indicates when sample drying is finished. The menu driven operation provides clear, concise instructions from device setup to sample drying. To operate the ADU, just place the sample into the chamber, press the button, and wait for the beep.

Measures Moisture Content as the Aggregate Moves Through the Plant
The MMS Model 3630 uses proven nuclear technology to continuously monitor moisture in your aggregate mix.
The moisture measurement occurs as the mix moves through the plant on the conveyor belt. There is no physical contact with the aggregate mix or belt. The system provides a continuous reading of the moisture content. The moisture content, combined with the knowledge of the mass proportions of the other components in the mix, provides you with a precise and reliable moisture content of the aggregate.
Saves Time and Money
An unknown change in moisture of the raw materials (often due to weather) will have a large impact on the quality and performance of the product made at your asphalt plant. With the MMS, moisture content of the combined aggregate is always known.
Knowing the correct dry weights of aggregate allows for more accurate mixing, resulting in savings by eliminating wasted binder. Additionally, knowing the moisture content of the aggregate mix entering the drum allows optimum temperature control resulting in additional savings from fuel.
Moisture Data can be Sent to Your Controls or Displayed in the Control Room
The MMS sends a standard signal as a current or voltage which can be sent to the control system for display to aid in the control of the plant parameters.
An optional control center is available to display, archive, and print the moisture data for your company's requirements.
The Fastest Burns in the Industry Complete, Clean Burns—Every Time
