Recognizing the need for an improved method of measuring the density of thin layer asphalt overlays, Troxler developed the first true thin layer density gauge, the 4640-B Surface Thin Layer Density Gauge.
Designed to measure the density of thin asphalt and concrete layers from 2.5 to 10 cm (1 - 4 inches), the Troxler Model 4640-B Thin Layer Density Gauge accurately measures the overlay density without influence from underlying material. No nomographs or manual corrections are required in order to compute the true density of the overlay. With onsite results available in as little as one minute, the Model 4640-B can provide the user with test results when they are needed, not hours after compaction has been completed.
Special Functions
The Troxler Model 4640-B Thin Layer Density Gauge complies with ASTM D2950 and AASHTO T 355.
The RoadReader 3450 Thin Layer & Full Depth Density Gauge is the most versatile moisture density gauge ever produced. It combines the measurement modes proven in thousands of Troxler 3400 series gauges with a patented method for true thin layer asphalt and concrete bridge deck overlay density measurement.
By combining thin layer and full depth measuring capabilities in one instrument, the RoadReader 3450 is our flagship gauge in the 3400 series. With its versatility, speed, and economy, the RoadReader Plus is designed to satisfy your compaction control needs at every stage of your project.
Easy Operation and Quick Measurements
The RoadReader is simple to use. An expanded keypad and easy-to-follow prompts provide access to all major gauge functions. It also provides both density and moisture measurements without time-consuming calculations, including wet density, dry density, moisture, percent moisture, percent compaction, percent voids, and percent air voids.
Additional Features
Like all 3400 series gauges, the Model 3450 meets ASTM Standard Test Methods D6938, D2950, C1040, and also AASHTO T 310 and T 355.
The Troxler nuclear moisture density gauges are used by many contractors, engineers, and highway departments for compaction control of soil aggregate, concrete, and full depth asphalt. The gauges meet or exceed the ASTM standards D6938, D2950, and C1040. The operator selects the density measurement mode, backscatter, or direct transmission based on the material type and the thickness of the layer being measured.
These updated gauges offer new standard features and many optional new features. The owner can customize the gauge to meet their testing needs.
The Model 3430 is the simplest and most economical gauge offered by Troxler. This gauge offers many features, including:
Optional features for the Model 3430 include:
The Model 3440 is for users who want user-friendly features. Along with the standard features provided in the Model 3430, the Model 3440 provides additional features including:
Optional features offered for the Model 3440 include:
Both models offer:

Troxler now offers a license-exempt option for soil quality control testing. The EGauge uses the proven nuclear technology for density measurements unlike other non-licensed density measurement devices. It provides accurate and reliable readings and it is easy to use. The EGauge Model 4590 complies with ASTM D8167.
Exempt from Licensing
Maintaining a radioactive materials license can be complicated and time consuming for owners of Specific Licensed gauges. In the United States, the EGauge is exempt from the radioactive materials license - no special training classes for operators, no TLD badges, no special shipping documents, and no reciprocity needed for use in other states.
Easy to Use
The operation of the Model 4590 is similar to that of the traditional Troxler nuclear density gauges so the experienced operator can use the gauge with little additional training.
Reliable and Repeatable Density Results
Data collected by multiple agencies shows excellent correlation between the EGauge and Troxler’s Model 3440 Density Gauge (R2 values ranged from 0.93 to 0.98). EGauge repeatability is also equal to that of the current density gauges as listed in the applicable ASTM specification (0. 3 lb/ft3 (4.8 kg/m3)).
Complete with Moisture Probe
The Troxler Model 6760 Moisture Probe is provided with each EGauge. The electromagnetic probe measures the moisture of the soil in the same prepared hole that is used for the density measurement. Bluetooth technology enables the probe to communicate the moisture data to the EGauge allowing the gauge to display complete results. The EGauge also accepts moisture data using the keypad if another method is used.
Additional Features and Options
Easy to Read Display – easy to read enlarged LCD screen with backlighting for viewing in low light conditions
Automatic Depth Mode – detects the source rod depth during each measurement
Data Storage and Output – stores up to 1000 test readings under multiple projects for later recall or downloading
Auto-Store Function – automatically stores sample data under the active project when enabled
USB Port – access for outputting stored data to a printer or removable USB storage drive
GPS – records GPS information with each measurement and has Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) capabilities for better accuracy
License Exempt, Troxler Accurate
From the inventor of the nuclear density gauge comes the ONLY combination nuclear gauge that is License Exempt!
License Exempt
Less hassle and saves money.
Eliminates: RML, Reciprocity, TLD Badges, Storage Requirements, Transportation Documents, Double Locks, Leak Tests, Record Keeping, Emergency Procedures, Expensive Shipping, Radiation Safety Training, and Military Base Restrictions
Going with license Exempt equipment also eliminates the risk of a surprise inspection by the state regulatory agency or NRC.
Combination Design - Backscatter and Direct Transmittion
Asphalt using backscatter, compliant with ASTM D2950 and AASTHO T 355.
ASTM D2950: Standard Test Method for Density of Bituminous Concrete in Place by Nuclear Methods
AASHTO T 355: In-Place Density of Asphalt Mixtures by Nuclear Methods
Soil using direct transmission and backscatter, compliant with ASTM D8167.
ASTM D8167: Standard Test Method for In-Place Bulk Density of Soil and Soil-Aggregate by a Low-Activity Nuclear Method (Shallow Depth)
Accurate
Lab tested to hold similar accuracy as licensed nuclear gauges
